It uses a layerless role-playing system, allowing the player to customize their abilities to take on roles as a warrior, poet, thief, or a combination of these. Through branching dialogue trees, the player’s actions and words affect how their skills and stats increase. During conversations, the time it takes for a player to decide is limited and impacts their relationships with others. Reputation depends on the player’s choices; therefore, consequences can occur.
It also features a needs system that requires players to sleep and eat to stay healthy. Also, equipment and clothing degrade and require repair. Food and other perishable items will spoil over time. The game uses skill / stat-based minigames for many missions, including repairing weapons and armor, collecting new items by selecting locks or pockets, distilling alcohol, or taking medicine.
They use long- and short-range weapons in combat that rely on a physical system that uses inverse kinematics to determine the reactions of both fighters based on the speed and weight of the blow. This system aims to add more variety and realism to combat, along with various basic combat and compound moves, some of which can be unlocked with skill points. Different weapons have different properties, making them useful for other purposes. For example, the sword is a fast weapon to hit and dodge, but it is ineffective against heavy armor.
